One of the trickier parts of being introduced to box lacrosse is the adjustment to a “busier” style of game play, and more physical contact at younger ages. For many years lacrosse has been shouldered with the burden of defending itself from the outsider’s view of the game, referring to it as “very rough” and even “savage” by some peoples’ standards. This is a huge, albeit common, misunderstanding!
Coaches have a role in breaking down the stereotypes by educating players (and parents) to play the game respectfully and properly. Referees have a role in breaking down those stereotypes by putting their best effort into maintaining a game that is safe and fair for all participants. This can sometimes be misunderstood during the transition period into Box Lacrosse, so Alberta Lacrosse, the Alberta Lacrosse Referees Association and the GELC have decided to host an event to bridge the gap often witnessed in minor lacrosse between coaches, parents and officials.

This evening will be dedicating to providing a unified message from referees to participants of the game. Tony Reid, the ALA Manager of Officiating, will join Karl Ranta (GELC Referee-in-chief) for a short presentation followed by an open forum for questions and answers. This has had great success in the past, and we are excited to host an event like this again!
